The Cariglyph Collection
Thousands of years ago, Amerindians native to upper South America and the lower West Indian islands carved icons and symbols into rocks. These marks, called petroglyphs, are assumed by modern anthropologists to represent basic information, such as the presence of fish traps in a river or plant life in a particular area; depictions of everyday or ceremonial activities; or personal 'autographs' in which hunters boast of their prowess. These 'Cariglyphs', a fusion of the words 'Caribbean' and 'petroglyph' were adapted from real petroglyphs found in the area of northern Amazonia and the Antilles, and represent a link between the first human inhabitants of the Caribbean and our present.
